Today I have lost a very close friend, my faithful, loving, sweet friend, a close soul, Jossan’s sister, Miii.
Many things happened in our cats’ lives in 2012.
Albert was the cat of March month on siames i fokus, a mostly Swedish/Norwegian social site for Siamese and Oriental cats.
Albert (again) fell and fractured his breast bone on Easter which bothered him until late summer, when he was successfully operated. Now he has recovered and is jumping happily around as he did before the fall.
We managed to put a removable net on our balcony and furnish it so that the cats could safely enjoy the fresh air.
Amazing mother and my beloved one-human-cat Jossan delivered six precious kittens (C-litter), who were raised and taken care of by the whole cat family for the first 3 months of their lives when five of them moved to their new permanent homes where they are very loved and taken care of.
We kept Claire, a kitten cared for by all the other cats, a little clown that loves all the cats and humans equally.
Leroy had a lump in the skin (yes – ‘in’, not ‘under’, there is a difference, and his was more likely to be malign) removed in the summer. Luckily that turned out to be only a lipoma. So, basically, he got his first liposuction this year! (I am joking now, but poor him, we were so worried) He was x-rayed and all his blood values checked on the same occasion and he is a very healthy, now a 6 years old cat!
Maven took many walks with us outside in our neighborhood where we have very little traffic and many pretty houses to look (and sniff) at. She and Miii spent a substantial amount of time with us in the garden, helping us.
Leroy was (unjustly?) pronounced fat by his humans and exposed to various methods of torture. One of them, putting him on a special diet for overweight cats, made him go UP in weight even more! Well, that is over now. Buying a new toy (Da Bird) and wrestling with Claire seems to keep him in shape. In spite of what his humans think, he got ‘Excellent’ as condition mark from both judges on the exhibitions he attended.
Yes, the exhibitions – Leroy and Claire were exhibited and that went great. We might do it again some time.
The cats got a few new beds and furniture that they seem to like.
Our cats were very much loved, played with and well fed during the whole year, as always. Sisters Jossan and Miii turned five years on December 27, and not only them but their two siblings from the same litter, also Leroy’s kittens – their handsome brother Gandhi that lives in Denmark and sister Noora that lives with one family in Stockholm. Happy birthday, dear cats!
Jossan and Miii spent their birthday lying close to and caring for their humans that fell ill with a bad influenza and were in fever for days (getting better as I write this). Our beautiful, beloved cats with big hearts whom we love so much, we wish you happy birthday and every other day! We are so happy to have all of you in our lives.
And to mark their fifth birthday – Miii was a model for our Christmas and Happy New Year card this year and I am working on a small painting of Jossan that will be finished when I feel better.
I’ll post a picture of the painting of Jossan when it is done.
Much love and happy New Year from Jelena and Joakim with the cats. ♥
I wanted sleeping sacks for our cats since I saw the pink one on the pictures that Casper’s new Mom sent me. Casper is called Imre now and he lives with two Burmese ladies, Daphne and Octavia and one Cornish Rex boy, Matteo. 🙂
Yesterday they finally arrived, our own sleeping sacks from Germany, http://www.katzen-deko.de/ , our favorite place for buying cat furniture! At first the cats were skeptical and more interested in a cardboard package than the sacks themselves. But today when I woke up, I found them in the blue room, sleeping like this:
Saturday afternoon at our home. It has been raining all day and it is already dark outside (it is 6 PM here). There is a whole 2 months left until Christmas but it already feels like the holidays are around the corner!
The heating is on, and our ‘furry lizards’, how Jocke called them, the pride of Siamese, are lying close to the radiator, the beloved source of warmth. 🙂 Maven with her fluffy semi-long fur does not feel the cold, she is lying in another window, looking at the street.
All the kittens from the C-litter have moved to their new homes some time ago and they are very happy and loved there. We kept Claire. She looks like Albert, since they are siblings and she is also white, but they are not that similar in temper. We are not sure yet how she will be when she grows up, personality wise.
Claire is a bit like Leroy in her attitude; “I am above you all and I am no one’s cat”. But she is also cute and affectionate and is purring when we cuddle with her. She sleeps next to us when we sit in the living room, on the pile together with the big cats. Albert and Leroy are the ones who take care of her (Albert) and discipline her (Leroy). But, also her aunt Miii helps a lot with the disciplining part.
Jossan seems to be relieved that the kittens have moved out and does not care much about good upbringing of her white daughter. Well, she deserves rest and all the help she can get, she is such a good mom and had a lot to do this summer. Now she is back to being my cat and is very cuddly and affectionate.
Jocke took some pictures of the disciplining session earlier today; Miii and Claire, this is how it was. 🙂
Today we had one sunny day after a lot of rain and cold last week, so we tried to arrange the balcony a bit. We want to grow plants that cats like to eat (like lettuce and Roman salad), also, herbs that we use in cooking and flowers that are not poisonous to cats.
It is a whole summer project, I guess, but the first plants (if I do not count pelargoniums that hang outside of the net, towards the street) have moved to the balcony today.
The cats smelled the plants carefully (that is, all cats except Albert; Albert chewed on everything but rosemary). Jossan chewed on some salad as well. The cats seem to appreciate our efforts (or, at least, they do not complain, and they showed a lot of interest in gardening).
Yesterday we woke up surprised with 15 cm of snow outside! It was snowing and snowing. Today almost all of it melted. The spring is fighting its way to Stockholm, but this winter is not giving up easily!
Albert is better. I gave him the last dose of his medication last night and he does not seem to be in pain at all anymore. He is lively and a active as usual. He is not swollen in the chest area, and the bruising is gone. The bone is still protruding, but it feels a bit less. He is okay with me examining him and even pressing the bone slightly, but he does not like to be lifted (he was never crazy about it, but now it is even less okay than before). But he is jumping everywhere and does not sleep as much as when he was in pain.
We will go to Buba in a week or two and see what can be done, and if anything should be done at all. If he does not have pain, behaves as usual, can do everything as before, and runs no higher risk of another injury, we will probably not have him operated. That is how we reason now. We will see.
Here is Albert taking a nap next to his aunt Miii.
A few meters from them, Jossan and Leroy are resting.
Does Jossan look a bit chubby to you?
She is not chubby! She is pregnant and slowly gaining some weight. 🙂 We expect kittens around May 19, and the dad is the same as to A and B litters; it is Albert’s and his siblings’ dad Goofy. Everything is going well so far. Jossan is fine and in spite of Albert being in total center of attention last week, she still got a lot of love and time alone with me. All cats have their special places and time with us, no one gets neglected.
Last year I took a week off when Jossan got kittens, this year Jocke planned one week vacation in the second half of May, to help Jossan at start and be there all the time with her and the small ones. I’ll of course also be with her for the delivery.
I captured Miii being cuddly. She is a big Siamese, but she is not fat. I cannot believe how chubby Miii looks when she lies on her back! She looks like a pillow. The most charming pillow ever!
And then we cuddled! 🙂
Miii has longer and thicker fur now, since it is winter. Siamese cats do not shed much at all. Maven sheds ten times more than all four Siamese together.
I warmly recommend Furminator (Swedish link: our Furminator I bought here, maybe there is a cheeper one somewhere), that helped us a lot with keeping the most of Maven hair from our furniture and clothes. Siamese like to be brushed with Furminator as well, but there is almost no hair to get from them, only a little bit during few weeks twice a year, when they change between winter and summer fur.
The days are getting a bit longer here. Jocke took a few pictures of cats today. Miii is very cute. Both she and Albert are like kittens, always so playful.
About two months ago, we went away for a vacation and our cats spent eight days in a cat hotel. That was a new place, that they never visited before. It is close to where we live now.
It was the first time we picked the cats from a cat hotel that they were cuddling with the lady that took care of them! She really spent a lot of time with them and she seemed so sad when we got them. But, we were happy!
After they came back home, Miii decided that Jocke should be her human. I was always her preferred human. Although we planned that she will be Jocke’s cat when we got her, she picked me, there was no help. Jossan was pretty pissed off because of that and it took them a long time until they worked out how to share me. But now Miii decided that both Albert and Jossan is too much to share a human with and decided that she is best friend with Maven and that they share Jocke! Maven is not so delighted with that; Maven likes to be close to humans, not to other cats. Siamese like to sleep close to humans and close to each other, on the Pile.
When Miii came to us, 2,5 years ago, she was very shy and hid from people who would visit us. She became more and more brave and social, but that happened slowly. Last week she yelled at one friend that came by and demanded that he pets her! Then she jumped in his lap and purred and demanded more petting. She did a similar thing to another friend that came by last Tuesday.
It is very warm in Stockholm during daytime. Jocke put together a new desk for my hobby room.
Cats got so tired from watching all the work. Cats love work. It fascinates them.
Albert loves to lie in the sun. There is plenty of space on the couch close to the window, on the floor, on the cat furniture…
But sometimes Albert wants all the 20 sqm of sunny spots for himself! Greedy Albert!
But, Miii is so cute! She deserves all the sunny spots in the world! Albert is still small and silly and has moments when he wants EVERYTHING for himself.
Jossan’s tummy is getting bigger. The ultrasound showed 5-6 babies, but it is hard to see exactly how many there are. They were so cute! Little kittens, moving a bit. One looked like he was waving to us with his small paws!
Jossan, Miii and Albert are resting in the sun. Albert is hardly visible, he fits the background so well.
There is 38 days left until the kittens arrive, if everything goes well. Jossan is going up in weight just fine, 430gr since the start of the pregnancy.
She was clumsy and quite active lately and played and rolled on the floor with the toys, and even fell once (10 days ago) from a shelf, but she still continued going up in weight really well and shows no signs of discomfort at all. We are going for a checkup and an ultrasound exam in 2 days (on Tuesday).
Last week we won the 1:st prize on Siameslinjens (our cat club) photo competition for our ‘Birdwatching’ picture! 42 photos were sent in, some of them very nice. I was so happy! It is one of those pictures I had to take very fast, in order to seize the moment when the cats were sitting so nicely in the window, equidistant, like little ornaments shaped as cats.
I had the light in the background, could not use the flash, did not have much time to focus, but it was a nice situation and a not so bad composition. The judge’s motivation for awarding the 1:st prize to this photo was “för sin utpräglade vardagssurrealism” (“for its striking surrealism of everyday life”).
We are very happy! 🙂
Jocke took a good picture of Miii yesterday.
Miii is very clever and empathic. When I have pain she feels it and comes, lies next to me and comforts me with her purring.
She communicates with me a lot and is very loving in a similar way as Jossan is. Both of them are one person’s cats, and I, Jelena, am that person in our family. As I type this she rests next to my arm. Our beautiful blue cat. I love her so much. :*
This is Albert’s first Christmas and he is delighted with all the ornaments! He likes to drag and carry them around, and chew on the branches.
I’ve tried real tree, plastic tree, hoping he will leave something alone, but, nope – he likes it all, nothing is safe and everything is tasty.
Every morning the poor Christmas tree is disintegrated and the ornaments lie all over the living room.
The worst was when he just discovered the beauty of everything that goes with Christmas. Now, two weeks later, Albert is a bit less creative with his constant rearrangements of our living space, but still not uncreative enough, to put it that way…
The moving company truck is coming in 8 hours. We still have so much to pack and also, we have to disassemble some pretty big pieces of furniture. We have 2 more weeks to move, but then we have to do it ourselves, by car. We are trying to pack as much as we can now.
The cats are helping, of course!
Leroy is tired, he has been helping us all day. Albert and Jossan are taking a nap as well:
I am tired and just now I wish I were one of my cats…
Back to packing!
Some time ago, this is how the Siamese used to lie together, on a pile in one of their beds:
Please, notice: Jossan is the smallest one, lying in the middle of the pile.
This is how they look together today (sorry, Miii, you are out of the picture and out of our bed…)
Pregnant Jossan, much bigger than before, is hugging Leroy:
Miii weighs 3,7kg now. She lost 0,6 kg since she moved to us and got to run outside and in the apartment together with our other cats. Her body looks a lot like her dad’s now, although she has a bigger frame than her sister Jossan. Daily wrestling with Leroy will keep her stay in shape.
Siamese are very slim and muscular cats, of medium weight and great lenghts. Still, some of them do get a bit overweight if they do not get enough exercise. Well, Miii’s days as being overweight are over!
I filmed one of their wrestling episodes a few days ago. It is a bit hard to catch them with a camera being ready… it is much easier taking shots of flowers. 😀
Miii (Angel) is the darker one, the blue point Siamese. At the end of the clip, you can notice Jossan, a little white spectator watching from a cat transport cage that was temporarily on the floor. Jossan likes to watch our other cats play, and sometimes she joins them, sometimes not.
We call Angel “Miii”. That was the sound she makes sometimes (pronounced as “meee” in English), when she wants attention. She is used to be called “Miii” now and we think it suits her well.
Miii did not want to come home when it got dark this evening. I called her, and she did not come.
Usually the Siamese stay out only for a short while, unless we are out with them. They are never out if we are not at home. Maven is allowed more, since she is “street smart”, and also, she likes to stay out longer. The Siamese like to be close to their humans, but it is good for them to run out a bit and eat grass when the weather is warm and it is not raining. They like a lot when we are out gardening, they are always “helping” us.
So, this evening, Leroy and Jossan were inside and Leroy got upset hat Miii did not want to come home. I let him out and he found Miii and took her home!
Leroy was totally crazy and wild when he was small, but now he has became a very responsible cat who takes care of the other members of the cat family. Cats mature socially between 2 and 4 years of age. He is about 2,5 years old now.
This picture could not have been taken before one week stay at a cat hostel. Spending time together on a much less space than usual does wonders for their love for each other. Every time we got them back from there they were nicer towards each other.
Our cats always stay at Solgläntans kattpensionat when we are out of town for a longer time. One day they can be without us. Two – four days they can be at home with a cat-sitter. Usually our friend Thomas takes care of the little ones. He sits and codes on his computer and they let him. 🙂
They take good care of our and other kitties in Solgläntans. They are cat enthusiasts that also take care of homeless cats and find them good homes. That is their primary area of engagement. If you live in Stockholm area and need a good place to leave your kitty while on vacation, we warmly recommend Solgläntans kattpensionat.
